Day Four of Re-Designed Lesson (Optional Day):
The day after finishing our research books, we were doing a lesson on finding the main topic and key details of a nonfiction text. I explained to students that the reason we learn to find main topic and details is so that you can retell a nonfiction story in your own words.
In small group on this day, I had students choose a classmate's research book to read. After reading their classmate's book, they wrote a letter to that person telling them what they learned from their book. They identified the main topic of the story (what animal it was about) and 2 details they learned from reading.
